How Much Should I Pay for Copywriting?

Introduction: Words Matter More Than You Think

It’s a great question, and the fact that you are asking it, shows that you already realise that words matter more than some people think.

Lots of jobbing “writers” on platforms like fiverr can knock out words, but when we talk about proper copywriting, you rant words that work together and work with your audience, it’s all about getting results from those words … clicks, calls, sales and trust.

I know if I got my cousins mate to write me something for this website, no-one, and I mean no-one would ever read it!

What Are You Really Paying For?

When you hire a proper copywriter, you’re not just getting a few sentences thrown together, you’re getting:

  • Research into your industry, business, topic, audience, and competitors

  • Tone of voice that actually sounds like you and your business, not a robot from an 80s B-movie

  • Structure and flow, this is important as you don’t want your reader to wander off halfway through

  • Experience, someone who knows what words word, why they are there and what they are going to do.

It’s like asking a plumber to fix your boiler for a fiver. You’re not paying just for their time; you’re paying for everything they know, everything they’ve learned, and everything they bring with them.

Same goes for writing. Proper copywriting connects with your audience, it’s not just written to fill spaces; good writing from a freelance copywriter saves you time, it builds trust and more importantly, it makes you money.

Cheap Copy: What Does It Actually Cost You?

Let’s look at this from the other side, what is the true cost of cheap copywriting … why? Because at some time we all tempted to buy cheap! I know, I do it, I’ve never bought a proper charging cable for my phone, I buy cheap and replace it four or five times a year!

Copywriting is similar. There’s always someone on a freelancer site offering 1,000 words for the price of a coffee. But here’s what usually happens:

  • The copy comes back sounding like it was written in a rush (and it usually is), this means that it will have all the charm of soggy cardboard

  • You usually end up rewriting it yourself, or paying someone else to write it properly

  • It just doesn’t connect with your audience (and how can it from a content farm!), so it sits there doing nowt

  • Worst of all – it makes you look cheap, cheap and untrustworthy, and folk remember that

If your copy isn’t helping your business grow, it’s holding it back. Simple as that.

So, What Should You Expect to Pay?

Alright, here’s the bit you came for. Prices can vary, you already know that, but to give you a ballpark figure:

  • A short product description might cost you £30 to £100, depending on quality

  • A full website rewrite could range from £500 to £2,000+, depending on size and depth

  • Blog posts with proper research and SEO in mind might be £100 to £300+ each

  • If you’re hiring an agency (particularly a full service one from a major city) or senior specialist, you’ll be paying more, but you will be getting the top shelf stuff.

If someone’s charging pennies, ask yourself how much time they’re really putting in, or how much time are they putting into generating your content with AI Tools! Quality takes time. Time costs money. You’re in business, you know the drill.

What to Look for (Besides a Price Tag)

Before you hire someone, have a proper look at them and look at:

  • Their approach. Do they ask questions, dig into your business, show an interest?

  • Their natural language. We would recommend that you ALWAYS go with a writer whose native language is the same as your own, their nuances in language can be really important.

  • Their personality. Afterall, you’ll want to work with someone who gets you, that will make your relationship run smoother.

  • What about experience in your sector? It’s an interesting point, working with someone who has written for your sector isn’t always the best option; sometimes, someone who can bring a different perspective, a slightly different way of working on your project can bring amazing benefits.

Final Word: You’re Not Buying Words – You’re Buying Results

You wouldn’t stock your shelves with rubbish that won’t sell; so why put dodgy words on your website or your packaging? The right copy can help you sell more, build trust, and make your business look and feel professional.

Think of copywriting like a decent coffee (or tea is that’s your preferred beverage), sure, you can get one cheap, but it probably tastes like dishwater and leaves you wondering why you bothered. Spend a bit more, and you’ll enjoy it properly, every time.
