A German Shepherd approaches a blue ball on a grassy field, surrounded by trees and fencing. The scene is bright and lively.
Hela with her football!

Being a freelance copywriter in Yorkshire is a lot like brewing the perfect pint; it takes time, care, and a good bit of graft, but when it comes together, it’s a thing of real beauty.

My wife, Deb, and I run Yorkshire Writers, a cosy little copywriting setup from our home in Yorkshire, where we do everything from sales letters to website copy, social media campaigns, and the occasional blog musing. Between us, clients get two pairs of eyes, two sets of brains, and more than a touch of Yorkshire common sense.

We thought we’d give you a little peek into a typical day in our lives. Spoiler alert; there’s tea, wordplay, a few dog toys flying about, and a fair bit of joy.

Mornings: The Holy Trinity - Email, Blog, Breakfast

First things first, the kettle goes on. I mean, priorities, right? While the tea brews, and the toast is browning, I check emails (I’m always first up, so I start the day off right) to see what the world wants from us today. There’s always something new to look at or think about; that's part of the fun.

I tend to start early, usually sat at the laptop by 7am; this morning, I’m chipping away at a blog post for our website about AI in commercial writing, weighing up the clever bits, while gently calling out the clangers. It’s one of those topics where things move fast, so while AI has its place, it is vitally important to keep it human, keep it honest, and still make the copywriting job matter. I love the creative thinking side; Deb is the eagle-eyed one, keeps us rooted in logic and polish (she can spot an out of place Oxford Comma a mile away!).

When she stirs, Deb looks over some content we wrote the day before for a small family building business, some clever website copy here with a little bit of SEO thrown in; we love this sort of writing, and we are good at it. We never naturally put too much fluff in our work, unless a client wants it of course, just enough of the right words for them to grab a little more business.

We plan to throw in a couple of social media posts for them too as a little bonus, as some of the new wording will work well as social posts too!

Midday: Fashion, Footpaths, and Fine Tuning

We’re working on some website copy today for a lovely little fashion business in Yorkshire. They’ve got heart, and a real sense of place; just the kind of thing we enjoy. It's not just writing about clothes; it's telling a story that sticks. That’s where Yorkshire comes in strong; honest storytelling, and again, no fluff.

Come late morning we head out for a walk with our German Shepherd, who treats every squirrel like it's a full-time job. We find that the fresh Yorkshire air does wonders, clears the head, reboots the brain, and gives those creative thoughts a gentle prod. Some of our best lines come mid-stride; I reckon the hills, lanes and fields help.

Afternoon: A Sales Letter, A Sandwich, and a Sprinkle of Socials

After a light lunch … crisps and sandwiches today, nothing that leads to a nap … we get back to a sales letter we’ve been working on for a client. It’s one of those pieces that needs rhythm, persuasion, and a touch of soul. I get the words flowing; Deb gives them their final polish. Between us, the thing has really come to life.

A message pops in from a potential client wanting a set of social media posts for a campaign they’re planning. We send a cheerful and professional reply, always glad to chat. One thing about being a freelance copywriter in Yorkshire, you’ve got to wear a few hats, but you never lose your own voice.

Deb then dives into proofreading some of the first draft pages I’ve written for that fashion business. She spots every misplaced comma and awkward phrase; it’s a gift. I’m more of a ‘sling it on the page and see what sticks’ type; she’s the detail master.

Early Evening: Copy Edits, Footie, and Freedom

We take a short break to play football in the garden with the dog. She thinks she’s a Premier League striker, to be honest, her dribbling is amazing, and she can weave her way around the garden like a pro. After that, a final tweak of some copy we’ve been refining. Nothing urgent today, which is always a treat, so we decide to knock off a little early.

As the sun dips over the fields and we settle into the evening, we often chat about how lucky we are. This little business of ours lets us work together, keep things flexible, and do what we love, while still having time for each other, our dog, and the odd leisurely lunch.

Being a freelance copywriter in Yorkshire isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. And for us at Yorkshire Writers, it’s the best of both worlds; doing something meaningful, together, in a place we love.

Need some words that actually work – with a bit of Yorkshire grit and two brains behind them? Get in touch; we’d love to chat about your next project.
